Largest Gathering of People in Fancy
Dress-world record attempt at Southwold
SOUTHWOLD, UK
-- The world record attempt for the Largest Gathering of People
in Fancy Dress takes place at Southwold Common on Sunday,
August 17, and is being organised by John Huggins who has
been inspired by his seriously ill granddaughter Sophie's
fight for life.

Last year nearly £30,000 was raised for charities that have
helped Sophie
who has been fighting an aggressive brain tumour.

Already more than 100 people have registered
to take part and it is hoped that the number who take part
will top last year's figure of 352.
“We are continuing to welcome more people to
take part and register for the day. We would also like to
hear from people who want to donate prizes for the tombola
or who want to act as stewards on the day,” said Mr Huggins.
“To qualify as a participant people must wear
at least three items of fancy dress and this will be checked
at registration on the day,” said Mr Huggins who is delighted
that a world record could be set.
“It was a wonderful day last year when so many
people took part but this year if we can also set a world
record it will be the icing on the cake,” he said.
Southwold Mayor Teresa Baggott will be judging
the fancy dress competition with prizes for the best entries.
Mr Huggins has received a lot of support for
the event from local businesses and organisations including
Southwold Red Lion, Southwold Summer Theatre, Nutters of Southwold,
Harbour Marine Services, The Black Olive, Southwold Pier and
Joules.
This year money raised is being divided between
the Children's
Trust, East
Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH)
and Cancer
Research UK.
The event starts at the Common near the sports pavilion
and there will then be a two-mile sponsored walk for fancy
dress participants. This year's theme is children's characters.
